Evan Ziporyn is an American clarinetist, composer, founder and director of Gamelan Galak Tika, as well as founding member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Borrowing from Balinese gamelan, African, classical, and jazz, Ziporyn has created groundbreaking, cross-cultural works with a downtown experimental sensibility. His music has been performed by Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, the Kronos Quartet, and So Percussion. As a member of the Steve Reich Ensemble, Ziporyn earned a Grammy Award for “Music for 18 Musicians” (1998). Ziporyn has performed as a soloist with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the American Composers Orchestra, and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. This year, Ziporyn was appointed Inaugural Director of MIT’s new Center of Art Science and Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he also serves as Head of Music and Theater Arts.
